Meta puts its employee tracking program on pause

Written by:

Meta announced it is pausing its AI tracking program for employees, but it’s not out of the goodness of its heart.

As reported by Business Insider, Meta temporarily suspended its Model Capability Initiative (MCI) due to an internal data leak. Through the leak, the entire staff at Meta was able to see employees’ private conversations, performance data, and transcriptions.

“We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards, and while we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we’re pausing it while we investigate,” a Meta representative told Business Insider.

Announced in April, the MCI was intended to improve Meta’s AI models by tracking its employees’ keystrokes and mouse movements. As expected, the company has faced backlash over the use of the MCI, which is mandated for most staff.
