The ongoing global shortage of solid state memory has claimed yet another victim, as Sony temporarily paused sales of the majority of products on its CFexpress and SD memory card lines.
As noted by PetaPixel, the only options left alone are the 960GB CFexpress Type B card and SF-UZ series SD cards. However, except for a few retailers, these cards are no longer available for sale in the U.S.
“Due to the global shortage of semiconductors (memory) and other factors, it is anticipated that supply will not be able to meet demand for CFexpress memory cards and SD memory cards for the foreseeable future,” reads the statement posted on the Sony Japan website.
“Therefore, we have decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of orders from our authorized dealers and from customers at the Sony Store from March 27, 2026 onwards.”
The statement goes on to insinuate Sony could restart sales once there is more supply of solid state memory. However, the company did not provide a timeline for when that could happen.
All of the affected memory cards remain in stock in the U.S., but once the existing stock is gone, it might be some time until you see more again.
The ongoing shortage is primarily due to high demand from AI data centers. This has left consumers and non-AI companies with very low stock and high prices.
