Concerns over the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses have hit U.S. politicians, as some pushed back on Meta’s plan to add facial recognition to them.
In a letter addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, U.S. senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Jeff Merkley of Oregon said smart glasses with facial recognition is a threat to one’s privacy. As a result, any deployment would warrant scrutiny.
“Despite Meta’s desire to minimize public attention on this product, the deployment of smart glasses equipped with facial recognition technology threatens Americans’ privacy rights and civil liberties, and therefore warrants close scrutiny,” reads the letter.
“The widespread deployment of facial-recognition-enabled smart glasses also risks accelerating the normalization of mass surveillance in the United States.”
The senators requested answers to six questions by April 6. These questions include if folks can have their biometric data deleted, whether Meta uses biometric data to train its AI models or improve facial recognition algorithms, and if Meta plans to share biometric data with local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies, among others.
