Turns out the Trump Phone is a copy of another phone

Initially touted to be American-made, the Trump Phone doesn’t seem to be any more American than any other smartphone.

Repair and teardown website iFixit partnered with NBC to get a hold of the latter’s Trump Phone and compare it with the HTC U24 Pro. When put under a CT scanner, it turns out the two phones are functionally identical.

They were even able to swap parts from one phone and put them in the other with no issue.

To be fair, there are a few differences. On the Trump Phone, the flash module was moved and the speaker grill was slightly adjusted. Also, the battery is slightly bigger in the Trump Phone and the chipset package comes from Micron instead of SK Hynix for the U24 Pro.

In a statement sent to The Verge, HTC said it “does not design or manufacture phones for third parties.” Considering how the company sold the majority of its smartphone business to Google in 2017, it’s possible that HTC partnered with another company to produce the U24 Pro.

As such, it’s possible that the same company produced the Trump Phone by re-using U24 Pro parts. It bears mentioning that the U24 Pro was made in China.
