The MacBook Neo’s $599 price created huge waves in the laptop industry, and Dell is responding to it by bringing back its XPS 13 laptop.
Unlike previous iterations of the XPS 13, which usually commanded four-figure price tags, this version will start at $699. If you’re a student, you can grab it for $599 until September.
For that price, you get the six-core Intel Core 5 320 processor, 512GB of storage, and a measly 8GB of RAM. That could be a concern, since Windows is notoriously resource-heavy, though the XPS 13 can be configured with up to 32GB of RAM.
The XPS 13 also features a 13.4-inch anti-glare touch display with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600. The refresh rate can go from 30Hz to 120Hz, with brightness topping out at 500 nits.
According to Dell, the XPS 13 has a “streaming” battery life of up to 17 hours. Real-world usage could knock that down a bit, but we will have to wait and see.
Compared to the MacBook Neo, the XPS 13 does have an advantage in a few areas. These include display refresh rate, color accuracy, and maximum RAM amount.
Still, the starting configuration with only 8GB of RAM could be a non-starter. Modern Windows machines usually run at least 16GB of RAM to run the operating system efficiently, but the ongoing RAM shortages might have forced Dell’s hand in this case.
The XPS 13 will be “arriving soon,” according to Dell.
