For years, Nintendo and Amazon had beef that led to Nintendo not wanting to sell its products on Amazon. We finally know why that was.
Speaking with attendees at New York University’s Game Center Lecture Series, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said the issue boiled down to money.
Amazon wanted to lead the pack in video game sales and sought to undercut its rivals to do so. According to Fils-Aime, an Amazon executive contacted him and said the company wanted “an obscene amount of support, financial support” from Nintendo.
This is a known illegal practice, something Fils-Aime pointed out as a detriment for Nintendo. Not only would it put the company at risk of legal trouble, but it would tarnish its relationships with other retailers.
As a result, Nintendo of America pulled its products from Amazon for a time.
The ice has seemingly thawed since then, however. If you visit Amazon’s website, you can now readily find Switch and Switch 2 consoles, as well as first-party accessories and games. Better yet, there is parity between how much Nintendo products cost on Amazon and how much they cost elsewhere.
