Steam Deck 2 is officially in the works

With the original Steam Deck now over four years old, Valve confirmed a successor to the popular gaming handheld is in the works.

Speaking with IGN, programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed Valve is “hard at work” on the Steam Deck 2. At this stage, he only dropped hints, saying the work Valve is doing on the handheld “will be learnings that build up to it.”

“We’re hard at work on it. And, obviously, every step of the way, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to Steam Deck, to everything that we’re announcing and shipping this year,” said Griffais.

Even with this confirmation, however, do not expect the Steam Deck 2 anytime soon.

Valve is currently working on the console-like Steam Machine, which remains slated to release later this year. The company is also working on the new ARM-based Steam Frame VR headset.

Then there is the ongoing memory shortage, which led to Valve delaying the release of some of its newly-announced hardware. This could have an impact on the Steam Deck 2’s pricing, if it drags on long enough.
