Roblox settles with Nevada to the tune of $12 million

Instead of duking it out in court, Roblox has opted to settle the lawsuit from the state of Nevada to the tune of $12 million.

As part of the settlement, Roblox will give $10 million over three years to local children’s support programs, such as the Boys and Girls Club and others. The company will also spend $2.5 million to fund a new law enforcement liaison position and awareness campaigns around online safety.

Then there are the youth-focused requirements.

As reported by AP News, the settlement calls for Roblox to enact an age verification system that estimates your age from a facial scan. It then combines that information with scans of your government-issued ID to verify your age.

With the new system, children will only be allowed to talk with other children with similar ages. Also, those under 16 years old will generally not be able to message adults. The only exception to this is if the youth is labeled a “trusted friend” assigned through a QR code.

The list of requirements doesn’t stop there.

The age limit for parental controls monitoring increases from 13 years old to 16 years old. Also, children’s accounts for anyone under 16 will have restricted access to adult content and be provided with a list of vetted games that are appropriate for younger players.

Unfortunately for Roblox, this does not end all of its legal woes. The company still faces lawsuits from several other U.S. states, including Kentucky, Iowa, Louisiana, Texas, and more.
