Once thought to be dead and gone, it seems like the idea of an Xbox-centric store for mobile devices isn’t dead yet.
As reported by The Verge, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Microsoft filed an amicus brief several weeks ago in the hopes of getting such a mobile store off the ground.
“Three weeks ago, we filed an amicus because mobile competition still matters and we believe the future of play should be more open,” said Sharma.
“While I am still learning, the idea of an Xbox mobile store is not dead.”
According to the brief, the judge in the Epic v. Google trial should force the search giant to open up Android. This would allow the Xbox mobile store and other virtual storefronts to live alongside the Google Play Store.
“Microsoft has undertaken significant efforts to prepare and launch new consumer offerings, which have won approval from Android users,” reads the brief.
This has been a long time coming for Microsoft.
The company first announced an Xbox mobile store back in 2022 as part of its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. At the time, Microsoft said a mobile store would allow it to better compete with Apple and Google on smartphones and tablets.
