Out of nowhere, developer Zynga surprised-dropped a new Borderlands game for the iPhone.
In a statement sent to Forbes, publisher 2K said Borderlands Mobile is a placeholder name and that this is a “limited-time” test. That is probably why it primarily runs on the iPhone, though you can download it on an iPad and use the full screen button to fill the screne.
“We are always exploring ways to introduce Borderlands to new audiences,” said a 2K spokesperson.
“Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Borderlands mobile project, with Gearbox providing creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history, and lore. We hope that players enjoy this new Borderlands experience and look forward to their feedback.”
That tracks with the game itself, which limits character selection to only Siren. You will eventually be able to pick between four Vault Hunters.
As for how it plays, Borderlands Mobile features co-op play and shorter missions to account for phone use. Although you can just use the touchscreen, it does work with physical controllers.
There is even an original campaign, with the opening video implying the game takes place sometime between Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4.
