It’s been almost six years since developer Undead Labs announced State of Decay 3, and it turns out there’s a reason why we’re still waiting for the game.
In an interview with YouTube channel Sunny Days, studio head Philip Holt admitted the game technically didn’t exist when it was announced. He said the team “working” on the game was a skeleton crew comprised of four to five people, with the game existing “in a Word document.”
Holt also clarified the announcement trailer for State of Decay 3 was pre-rendered and did not show any real gameplay. The footage “represented a concept, our thoughts at the time of what might be cool to explore in State of Decay 3.”
State of Decay 3 is a long time coming for fans of the zombie series. According to a Kotaku report, there was internal strife over what would be in the game in order to impress the higher-ups at Microsoft.
This, along with other internal issues, reportedly led to staff turnover.
The good news is there might finally be light at the end of the tunnel. Undead Labs announced alpha playtests for State of Decay 3 are coming in May.
