In Tokyo, Japan, a man brandished a knife and killed a woman in a Pokemon Center store before stabbing himself, reported Associated Press.
The woman was believed to be in her 20s and an employee of the store. Both the woman and the attacker were in critical condition when they were transported to a local hospital. They were later pronounced dead.
The Pokemon Company issued a statement on the matter and said the store will be closed “until further notice.”
“Due to the incident that occurred on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo in Sunshine City, Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo, we will be temporarily closed until further notice, prioritizing our full cooperation with the police and the physical and mental well-being of our staff,” reads the statement.
“We sincerely apologize for the great concern and inconvenience this has caused everyone. We will inform you again when we will be reopening for business.”
It’s unknown what the motive may have been, but there is an alleged history between the two.
According to a report from Japanese outlet Asahi, the woman filed a complaint with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department over the attacker allegedly stalking her. Police issued a restraining order against the attacker, who was reportedly previously arrested for violating Japan’s anti-stalking laws.
