Seemingly out of nowhere, OpenAI announced it is sunsetting its Sora video generation AI tool.
According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI will not roll Sora into ChatGPT as previously rumored. Instead, the Sora app and all API access for developers will be discontinued.
“We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it, thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing,” reads the statement.
“We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
OpenAI did not say why it’s discontinuing Sora. It could be due to the company wanting to more more resources toward ChatGPT as OpenAI still tries to figure out how to monetize it.
One thing is for sure – the deal with Disney is pretty much dead, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
In December 2025, Disney announced it would invest around $1 billion in OpenAI and license its properties for use within Sora. The deal would also send AI-generated videos from Sora into Disney Plus.
