The Apple Pencil is poised to see a refresh, and it could see a substantial upgrade for those who like to fix their own stuff.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on new accessories for the Apple Pencil, the company’s capacitive stylus for its iPads. This implies the company is working on new generations of the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and wireless-charging Apple Pencil Pro.
These new styli will reportedly have new battery systems that will make them easier to remove and replace. These changes would likely be in response to upcoming European Union (EU) regulation.
Set to take effect in February 2027, Article 11 of the EU Batteries Regulation requires all portable batteries to be readily removable and replaceable. Although the initial intended target is the smartphone, the regulation also applies more widely to include accessories like keyboards, styli, computer mice, headphones, and plenty more.
We will have to wait and see the changes Apple makes to the rest of its product lineup to be in compliance with the new regulation. Until then, unless you need a new Apple Pencil right now, it might be worth waiting it out.
