Pokémon card scalping has taken a life of its own since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and Nintendo seems to be fully aware of the concerns this brings.
During a recent shareholder meeting, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked how the company is addressing card scalping. In his response, Furukawa said The Pokémon Company, which produces the cards, is “taking various measures.”
“With respect to the Pokémon Trading Card Game offered by The Pokémon Company, which is an equity-method subsidiary of Nintendo, we are aware of instances where limited-quantity cards are purchased in large volume, leading to high-priced reselling in the market,” said Furukawa.
“In response, The Pokémon Company is taking various measures, including made-to-order sales and agreements with marketplace operators.”
Sales of Pokémon cards have exploded since the pandemic.
Retailers in the U.S. have taken their own steps to try and stop scalpers. Some Target stores, for example, limit Pokémon merch and card sales. Meanwhile, GameStop discontinued Pokémon card pre-orders as of February 2025.
