If you were hoping for Microsoft’s Surface computers to come down in price, I have some bad news for you.
Today, the tech giant announced price increases for its Surface Pro tablets and Surface Laptop. Here are the starting prices for the devices compared to what they started at:
- 12-inch Surface Pro – $1,049 (up from $799)
- 13-inch Surface Pro – $1,149 (up from $899)
- 13-inch Surface Laptop – $1,199 (up from $899)
- 13.8-inch Surface Laptop – $1,499 (up from $999)
- 15-inch Surface Laptop – $1,599 (up from $1,299)
In a statement sent to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson blamed the price increases on the ongoing RAM and storage shortages.
“Due to recent increases in memory and component costs, Surface is updating pricing on Microsoft.com for its current‑generation hardware portfolio,” said the spokesperson.
“We remain committed to delivering value to customers and partners while upholding our standards for quality and innovation.”
This paints an ugly picture for Microsoft, especially as it continues to compete with Apple. The price increases mean the 13-inch MacBook Air is $150 less than the 13-inch Surface Laptop, and the former comes with a more powerful processor and better app compatibility.
The price increases also mean there isn’t a single Surface device that costs less than $1,000. When every dollar counts nowadays, that could be a tough pill to swallow for some.
