Those hoping for the Final Fantasy IX remake to see the light of day might want to avert their eyes.
On the latest episode of his podcast, known game leaker NateTheHate said the game is currently “on ice.” He expounded on the comment and said it doesn’t mean developer Square Enix has given up on the project.
“Now, ‘on ice’ with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I’ve heard there’s been no new movement with it,” said NateTheHate.
“Hopefully, one day, Square Enix returns to it and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light.”
A Final Fantasy IX remake has been rumored for years. Back in September 2021, an Nvidia leak showed various projects that eventually released in the years since. In fact, the remake is the only game from that leak that hasn’t yet released.
Still, Square Enix isn’t ignoring the game. In celebration of the classic, Square Enix is releasing a picture book prequel, new merchandise, and a new animated TV show.
