Earlier today, Sony announced it will raise the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles globally starting on April 2.
The PS5 Digital Edition will cost $599.99 instead of $499.99. Meanwhile, the standard PS5 will go from $549.99 to $649.99. Finally, the PS5 Pro will go from $749.99 to $899.99.
Even the PS Portal handheld isn’t immune from the price increases. On the same day, it will go from $199.99 to $249.99.
According to Sony, the price increases are due to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”
“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” reads the statement.
There are several factors potentially at play, the first being tariffs. The U.S. government’s inconsistencies when it comes to tariffs have led companies to adjust the prices of their products to account for the higher fees.
Then there are the ongoing RAM and storage shortages. AI companies like OpenAI and Google have gobbled up as much memory and storage as possible to power their AI-focused data centers. However, this has led to ballooning prices and a lack of inventory for consumers and other companies alike.
