OpenAI finds itself in hot legal water as Encyclopedia Britannica and dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster filed a lawsuit against the company, reported Reuters.
According to the lawsuit, OpenAI unlawfully copied almost 100,000 articles to train ChatGPT. The AI would then reportedly spit out responses that were “substantially similar” to Britannica’s content.
The lawsuit also claimed OpenAI was “cannibalizing” Britannica’s web traffic with these similar-sounding responses instead of directing people to Britannica’s content.
Britannica requested an unspecified amount for monetary damages and an injunction against OpenAI. An OpenAI spokesperson responded to the lawsuit, saying, “Our models empower innovation, and are trained on publicly available data and grounded in fair use.”
