This morning, Apple finally announced a proper successor to its over-the-ear AirPods Max headphones.
In terms of aesthetics, the AirPods Max 2 aren’t that different from their predecessor. We’re still looking at large, colorful earcups with a matching headband. All of the changes are on the inside.
The AirPods Max 2 are equipped with the H2 chip first introduced in the AirPods Pro 2. According to Apple, the chip allows for improved audio algorithms that should lead to improved noise cancellation.
The H2 chip also allows for several other features, chief among them a new “Adaptive Audio” function. It changes the headphones between transparency and ANC modes based on the environment you’re in.
Another new feature includes a conversation mode that lowers the volume and increases transparency levels when you’re talking with someone. Lastly, there’s the Live Translation feature that translates incoming and outgoing speech in real time.
Then there are the non-H2 features. The AirPods Max 2 support lossless audio with a USB-C cable, up to 20 hours of battery life, and a camera remote feature to take photos or videos from a distance.
Pre-orders for the AirPods Max 2 open on March 25, with availability starting in early April.
