
According to a recent report, the next generation iPad Pro will feature a way to stay nice and cool under load, and it has the iPhone 17 Pro to thank.
What’s the sitch?
On his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the M6 iPad Pro will have a vapor chamber for cooling. The report claims Apple is currently working on the vapor chamber, which could be added in spring 2027 as part of Apple’s 18-month cycle for the iPad Pro.
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are the first Apple devices to feature vapor chamber cooling. It does so by sealing deionized water in the vapor chamber, which moves heat through the system to dissipate and release heat through the aluminum unibody construction.
The end result is a phone that, on paper, is able to maintain similar levels of performance for longer periods of time compared to its predecessors.
Seeing how Apple could continue to make the iPad Pro more capable in terms of processing and capability, a vapor chamber could help in terms of sustained performance.
Our take
In the grand scheme of things, this might seem like a relatively minor feature. Vapor chamber cooling is already a thing for certain high-performance Android smartphones, so it’s nice to see something similar head to the iPad Pro.
However, this could end up becoming a much bigger deal down the line.
It’s curious that Apple would use the iPad Pro to bring a feature usually kept for laptops. It’s also curious that none of Apple’s desktops or laptops include vapor chamber cooling.
Perhaps Apple is using the iPad Pro as a testing ground to eventually bring the feature to its other devices. It could also be indicative of the company wanting to place a few more bets on its tablet as its future of computing.
