We might have a second The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) game on the horizon.
According to an Insider Gaming report, video game developer Crystal Dynamics is working on the game. The studio is reportedly getting financial backing from the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
The idea is for the game to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy.” This could mean the LOTR game will be an open-world game with varying hub areas to accept quests. Crystal Dynamics is reportedly getting some help from game developer Revenge.
Publisher Embracer declined to respond to a request for comment.
If true, this would be Crystal Dynamics’ third project. The studio is already working on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, which are due out in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
This would also be the second LOTR game in development. Reports claim Warhorse Studios, which developed the two Kingdom Come games and is also owned by Embracer, is working on a new LOTR game.
Embracer currently owns the gaming rights to The Lord of the Rings. Back in 2024, the publisher said it was experimenting with new ideas for LOTR games. Only time will tell if those experiments bear any fruit.
